Twenty-six years after the first A2, Audi is reviving the name on a fully electric city car that claims a precise title: the most efficient in its history. The Audi A2 e-tron delivers 12.8 kWh/100 km and up to 646 km of WLTP range, two figures that redefine the brand's entry level.

Positioned as Audi's new entry model, the A2 e-tron does not play the raw power card but the frugality one. It is built on a modified version of the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, with motors that are less powerful but reworked: new semiconductors, new windings and anti-friction measures to surpass the efficiency of the previous-generation MEB. The result shows in a single figure: 4.8 miles per kWh on the WLTP cycle for the 187 ch version fitted with the optional efficiency pack.

why is the audi a2 e-tron so efficient?

A drag coefficient of 0.24, the best in the Audi range.netcarshow

The A2 e-tron's efficiency is not down to its mechanicals alone. Audi attributes its record consumption as much to aerodynamics as to the powertrain. The city car claims a drag coefficient of 0.24, the best value in the Audi range. Added to this are four levels of energy recuperation, including one-pedal driving accessible via the B selector.

During an initial prototype drive, the specialist press even recorded efficiency exceeding five miles per kWh, slightly better than the homologated value. This is an encouraging signal, even if it does not yet replace an independently validated range figure. The efficiency highlights can be summed up as follows:

  • WLTP consumption of 12.8 kWh/100 km, the lowest ever achieved by an Audi model.
  • Drag coefficient of 0.24, the best in the range.
  • Four levels of recuperation, including one-pedal driving.
  • Reworked MEB motors: new semiconductors, windings and reduced friction.

what range and which batteries for the a2 e-tron?

electric car battery pack technology cutaway concept
Three battery sizes, LFP and NMC chemistries depending on the version.netcarshow

The A2 e-tron comes in three battery sizes: 52, 61 and 84 kWh. The two smaller ones use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry, reputed to be durable and able to withstand repeated charges to 100 % without damage. The top 84 kWh version, for its part, adopts NMC chemistry, which is more energy dense. The battery also offers fast and bidirectional charging, allowing the car to feed energy back.

It is the combination of frugality and the largest battery that unlocks the maximum range: up to 646 km on the WLTP cycle, or just over 400 miles in the North American market. Here is how the technical range breaks down:

  • 52 kWh battery: LFP chemistry, entry version.
  • 61 kWh battery: LFP chemistry.
  • 84 kWh battery: NMC chemistry, paired with the 170 kW output for the highest range.
  • Maximum WLTP range: up to 646 km.
  • Fast and bidirectional charging as standard on the battery technology.

At this stage, Audi is communicating charging described as fast, but the peak DC power and the precise time for a 10 to 80 % recharge have not yet been officially confirmed. We will document them as soon as they are published.

what power and what performance to expect?

The A2 e-tron is not limited to a single powertrain. The range offers four power levels, from 167 to 322 ch, or from 125 kW to 240 kW depending on the versions and battery sizes. The 187 ch variant, with the optional efficiency pack, is the one that claims the title of the most efficient of all time at Audi.

However, Audi has not yet provided an official 0 to 100 km/h figure for these various powertrains. We prefer not to put forward an unconfirmed value: the A2 e-tron's positioning remains clearly one of frugality and urban versatility, more than one of pure performance. The step-up through the range is structured as follows:

  1. Entry version: 167 ch (125 kW).
  2. Efficiency version: 187 ch, the most frugal in the catalogue.
  3. 170 kW version paired with the 84 kWh battery.
  4. Top version: 322 ch (240 kW).

how much does the audi a2 e-tron cost?

The price argument is one of the A2 e-tron's strongest. It starts at 38,200 euros in Germany and at 32,200 pounds in the United Kingdom (on-the-road price). In the United States, the indication is around 45,000 dollars for a version exceeding 400 miles of range. The German pricing grid rolls out as follows:

  • Entry A2 e-tron: from 38,200 euros.
  • 61 kWh variant: from 41,900 euros.
  • 170 kW version with 84 kWh battery: 48,900 euros.
  • Top 240 kW version: from 51,200 euros.

The car will be assembled at the Audi plant in Ingolstadt, Germany. Orders will open on 10 September 2026, with first deliveries expected in December. No monthly subscription plan has been announced by Audi for this model so far.

how does the a2 e-tron compare with its rivals?

In the premium electric city car segment, the A2 e-tron faces two natural benchmarks: the MINI Cooper Electric, its most direct rival on image, and the Renault 5 E-Tech / Alpine A290 duo, which has become the yardstick for the efficiency-value ratio. Here are the figures confirmed to date for the Audi, presented consistently.

Audi A2 e-tron:

  • WLTP consumption: 12.8 kWh/100 km.
  • WLTP range: up to 646 km.
  • Batteries: 52, 61 and 84 kWh (LFP and NMC).
  • Power: from 167 to 322 ch (125 to 240 kW).
  • Aerodynamics: Cd of 0.24.
  • Price: from 38,200 euros (32,200 pounds in the United Kingdom).
  • 0-100 km/h and DC charging power: not disclosed to date.

MINI Cooper Electric: direct premium rival in the high-end city car segment, positioned on image and driving pleasure. The official range, battery, power and charging figures will be updated as soon as they are verified, so that we only compare confirmed data.

Renault 5 E-Tech / Alpine A290: rival with a value and efficiency positioning, a benchmark for the segment. Here again, we will complete the spec table (range, battery, power, 0-100 km/h and charging) only with sourced figures, rather than putting forward estimates.

Worth noting: if the goal is a same-platform comparison, the Cupra Born and the Volkswagen ID.3, which share the MEB base, are a relevant alternative to the MINI and the Renault.

the verdict: should you wait for the a2 e-tron?

Based on confirmed facts, the Audi A2 e-tron ticks decisive boxes: the best efficiency ever achieved by the brand (12.8 kWh/100 km), a record Cd of 0.24, a three-battery offering that covers a wide range, LFP technology tolerant of charging to 100 % with a bidirectional function, and an aggressive entry ticket at 38,200 euros. For mostly urban and suburban use, with range that can climb to 646 km on the largest battery, the proposition is coherent.

Our reservation lies with the data still missing: Audi has not confirmed the 0 to 100 km/h nor the DC charging power. These two points will determine the final judgement on long-distance versatility. As it stands, the A2 e-tron establishes itself as the most frugal electric city car in the Audi catalogue, at a controlled price, which is already enough to place it at the top of expectations in the compact premium segment.
